We use a proven near-peer, train-the-trainer model, training and developing volunteer Teaching Fellows to serve as facilitators in classroom environments.
Teaching Fellows are women 18 years of age and older, possessing or working toward a bachelor’s degree in health, medicine, biological sciences, education, or a related field.
Teaching Fellows undergo curriculum training and mandated reporter training for the state in which they serve. We provide experiential learning to our Teaching Fellows, equipping them with leadership development and a greater understanding of intersectionality that they can bring into their careers as well as into their personal lives and relationships.
We constantly evolve to meet the needs of the girls and young women we serve.
As an organization, we constantly evolve to meet the needs of the whole girl and young woman.
We maximize our impact through pre- and post-workshop surveys and modify or adapt our programming based on the results. We provide an up-to-date curriculum that is translated linguistically and culturally to ensure we contextualize the curriculum to local resource settings and realities.
Our Workshops
At Girls Health Ed, we focus on the whole girl, providing a curriculum that emphasizes all aspects of health, including:
Nutrition
Healthy does not have to be boring! In our Nutrition workshops, girls learn about the various food groups, how they can make their favorite meals even healthier, how to read nutrition labels, and how to have fun and be creative with healthy food.
Physical Activity
Physical activity can take a variety of forms, which we go over in our Physical Activity workshops. The girls have the opportunity to talk about and even demonstrate the types of physical activity they enjoy doing, and the Teaching Fellows often lead the girls in a group-wide movement-based activity.
Puberty & Personal Care
Puberty sure can be confusing and stressful, but it’s not forever, and girls are not alone. In our Puberty & Personal Care workshops, girls learn how to take care of themselves as they deal with the many changes they experience during puberty.
Body Image, Self-Esteem, & Goal Setting
In our Body Image, Self-Esteem, & Goal Setting workshops girls learn that their beauty is not just tied to their physical appearance, but also to their internal qualities.
Violence Prevention, Healthy Relationships, & Consent
In this workshop, girls learn to identify what constitutes a healthy, unhealthy and an abusive relationship, They practice effective communication techniques, conflict resolution, and boundary setting.
Menstruation
In our menstruation workshops, girls learn exactly what is happening in their bodies during their period and why they get their period. They learn how to manage cramps and pains associated with their periods and how to keep track of their menstrual cycle.
